Is it okay to leave an inflatable SUP inflated?

Is it okay to leave an inflatable SUP inflated?

One of the greatest advantages of owning an inflatable paddleboard is its convenience.

When deflated, it can be easily stored in spaces as small as a backpack, making it an ideal option for those with limited storage space, such as apartment dwellers.

But what if you have enough room? Is it okay to leave your paddleboard inflated?

At Newell Outdoors, we believe in making your paddleboarding experience as hassle-free as possible. Whether you live in a compact apartment or have ample storage, understanding how to care for your inflatable paddleboard is key to extending its lifespan and keeping it in top condition.

The Perks of Inflatable Paddleboards

Inflatable paddleboards are not just for those with limited space—they're for everyone. Their versatility, portability, and ease of use make them a great choice for all paddlers, whether you're a beginner or a seasoned expert. However, inflating and deflating your board before and after every use can be time-consuming, especially if you paddle frequently.
Luckily, with the right storage conditions and a few essential guidelines, you can leave your board inflated without worry.

The Risk of Over-Expansion

While there’s no rule against leaving your paddleboard inflated, we strongly recommend deflating it if you plan to store it for an extended period. The main concern with leaving your board inflated is the risk of over-expansion. Over-expansion occurs when excessive air pressure causes the seams of your board to burst, which could result in costly and complicated repairs—or the need to buy a new board altogether.

Over-expansion can happen in two ways:

  1. Over-Inflation: Pumping too much air into your board when inflating it before use.
  2. Heat Expansion: As temperatures rise, the air inside your board expands, increasing the internal pressure.

This is why it’s crucial to either deflate your board completely or at least reduce the PSI if you’re storing it for a while.

How to Prevent Over-Expansion

Preventing over-expansion is straightforward, and following these simple steps will help keep your board in optimal condition:

  • Inflate to the Recommended PSI: Always inflate your board to the PSI recommended by the manufacturer. Over-inflation can lead to excessive pressure, risking damage to your board.
  • Avoid Direct Sunlight: Heat causes the air inside the board to expand. To prevent this, keep your board out of direct sunlight, especially if it’s a darker color that absorbs more heat.
  • Store in a Cool, Dry Place: If you choose to leave your board inflated, store it in a cool, dry place with a stable temperature. A garage, shed, or a cool room inside your home works well.
  • Release Air When Not in Use: Even if you leave your board inflated, reducing the air pressure slightly can prevent over-expansion and reduce stress on the board’s seams and material.

What Happens if I Leave My SUP Inflated While in Storage?

Newell Paddleboards

If you leave your paddleboard inflated during storage, it will gradually lose some air over time. This is normal and not a cause for concern. You’ll simply need to top it up before your next paddle.

How Long Can You Leave a SUP Inflated?

With proper storage, you can leave your paddleboard inflated indefinitely. The key is ensuring it’s stored correctly—out of direct sunlight, in a cool and dry place, and with reduced air pressure if needed.

Should You Deflate Your Paddleboard for Storage?

The decision to deflate your board depends on your lifestyle and storage options:

  • Deflate It: If you paddle infrequently or live in a small apartment, deflating your board after each use is practical and saves space.
  • Keep It Inflated: If you paddle often, live near a waterway, or have adequate storage space, leaving your board inflated can save time and effort.

In either case, make sure your storage conditions are ideal.

Caring for Your Inflatable SUP

Whether you choose to leave your board inflated or deflated, follow these care tips to keep it in the best possible condition:

  • Dry Your Board: After each use, rinse your board with fresh water (especially after using it in saltwater) and allow it to dry completely. This prevents mold and mildew growth.
  • Reduce Air Pressure: As mentioned, reducing air pressure before storage can prevent over-expansion and relieve stress on the seams and PVC material.
  • Use a Storage Rack: If you store your board inflated, avoid leaving it on the floor. Gravity can cause damage over time. Instead, invest in a storage rack that keeps your board off the ground and away from potential hazards.
  • Protect from Sunlight: Sunlight can not only cause over-expansion but also fade and weaken the board's material. Always store your board in a shaded area.
  • Cover Your Board: To prevent scratches and damage, cover your board with a breathable fabric or tarp, ensuring there’s a gap between the cover and the board to avoid condensation.

At Newell Outdoors, we understand the importance of maintaining your equipment so it lasts for years to come. Whether you choose to store your paddleboard inflated or deflated, the key is following the proper guidelines to ensure your board remains in excellent condition.

By taking these simple precautions, you can enjoy worry-free paddling, knowing your board is ready for the next adventure whenever you are.
